  • E139 - The future belongs to the misfits - with Nick Gross, musician, entrepreneur, educator

    43:12|
Did you scope a career, focus on getting the skills, and hoped the lifestyle would work out? That’s how we were taught, back in the day. Gung-ho drummer extraordinaire Nick Gross is upending what it means to build a career, by helping students (and older folk like me) determine what lifestyle they want, what strengths they have, and THEN what career might work. Welcome to a new way of thinking about your passion and your work. 👉🏼PSSST…  If you want to join a community of like-minded leadership thinkers, sign up for my weekly leadership articles and get the People Stuff Toolkit as a bonus. Get it here now. Why you should listen: How to check if your lifestyle, strengths, and careers are aligned (or how they could become so). Why the future belongs to the misfits, and why you want to be one. How to create communities that go beyond geographical location to a global bridge based on interests. We explore: How routines create a success mindset. Success is about enjoying the process and not just the destination (and how to overcome the struggles with that). How a kinaesthetic learning preference shaped his view and experience of the world. The biggest struggles are often a paradox: the hardest part of the day is getting going, and the hardest thing to do is slowing down. *** SHOWNOTES: https://www.zoerouth.com/podcast/nickgross About Nick Gross: Nick translated his passion for music and entrepreneurship into a career. He has parlayed this success in the music industry into a career as an entrepreneur within both the music and entertainment industries. He is the drummer for LA’s alternative pop-rock band Half the Animal, previously for Open Air Stereo. He is the founder of Big Noise Live creating free college festivals with major music artists like Wale and electronic duo Zed’s Dead. In 2018, he launched Gross Labs, a multi-dimensional entertainment and media company with the purpose of influencing culture trends and building stronger communities through music, education, gaming, and philanthropy.  Nick has founded several music entertainment companies such as STRZ Enterprises and Big Noise Music Group with acclaimed music producer John Feldmann and Vagrant/BMG executive Jon Cohen. The music division is supported by Gross' multimedia recording studio, The Noise Nest. He also was part of a group of investors that raised $2.9 million in seed funding for the mobile application Speakr. Take the Self & career discovery assessment Find out if you’re a mentor, entrepreneur, competitor, leader…  Instead of starting with the kind of job you want, FYG encourages you to look within by taking their assessment (found on their website and app) to identify your passions and translate that into careers and lifestyles for today’s workforce.  Find Your Grind website. • E138 - If your culture is toxic, look in the mirror - with Colin Ellis

    43:26|
I met Colin Ellis a few years ago when he first arrived in Australia from Liverpool. He makes dapper cool again with his sensational dress sense and million dollar smile. As the leader, if you are not addressing the behavior, you're part of the problem. ultimately, in toxic cultures, managers have got to look at themselves in the mirror.
