The DFO Rundown

Carolina Hurricanes Assistant GM Eric Tulsky

Ep. 228

We are back with a Monday edition of the podcast and to start things off, they dug into the Vancouver Canucks decision to buyout Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The move opens up a lot of cap space for this summer, but means his deal will be on the books for eight more seasons. Was it worth it? Frank and Jason debated it and also talked about where ‘OEL’ goes from here.

Tyler popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank as well. He asked the guys about offseason plans for the Avalanche and Red Wings and which Canadian teams could also go the buyout route.

Eric Tulsky joined to show at the 25 minute mark. The Carolina Hurricanes Assistant GM career path is one of the most unique in the NHL. He talked to Jason and Frank about when he first got bit by the hockey bug, his career before jumping into the NHL world, and how he sees the impact on analytics in the sport changing.

He’s also been in the mix for a lot of opening General Manager jobs. He gave us some insight into those processes and what he’s learned from getting to talk to teams.

  • 303. Controversial Calls & The Oilers Goaltending Problem

Boston Bruins fans were up in arms on Sunday night as a controversial goalie interference review didn’t go their way and allowed the Panthers’ eventual game-winning goal to stay on the board. Jason and Frank started the show with that and then eventually moved on to the rest of the series between Boston and Florida, including another controversial moment involving Sam Bennett. They also hit on the other Eastern Conference series between the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes are on the brink of elimination and the odds seem low that they’ll be able to pull of this comeback against the Rangers and that led to a conversation about what the franchise will do in the offseason. From there, they got to the Oilers and Canucks series. Goaltending has been a massive story in this series as Stuart Skinner was pulled in game three and the Oilers are down 2-1 despite controlling play for the majority of the series. The summer of big moves has begun in Toronto as they fired Sheldon Keefe this morning following another first-round exit. We have superstars fighting in Florida, teams out west blowing big leads, and a battle of two giants in the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes. The Oilers held a three-goal lead in their series opener against the Canucks and ended up losing the game in regulation. • 301. Previewing a Potentially Electric Second Round

The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs has come to a close and as Frank said last week on the podcast, it was one of the least exciting first rounds we’ve seen in a while. There were only two series that went the distance and a handful ended in five games or earlier. While the first round wasn’t exactly eye-popping, it’s looking like the second round could be exactly that. Every matchup has some intriguing storylines behind it and there are some juggernaut matchups. Frank and Jason worked their way through the four series and talked about the key factors in each one.The Rangers are already up 1-0 on the Canes and that’s a series that could very easily go to seven games. The other Eastern series features a rested Panthers team going up against a Bruins team that just finished off the Leafs on Saturday night. Can the Bruins get revenge for last season? Before getting to the West, Tyler swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, brought to you by Wendys. He asked the guys a couple of questions about round two and one about what the Leafs need to prioritize this summer. They then got into the two Western series. The Avs and Stars is going to be a grind and is another one that seems destined for seven. We also have an all-Canadian matchup between the Vancouver and Edmonton, which could lead to some serious fireworks both on the ice and online. They wrapped up the pdocast with some talk about what the Maple Leafs and Golden Knights will have to do this summer.4:40 - Rangers vs Canes preview12:30 - The Jack Adams18:00 - Panthers vs Bruins preview24:10 - Fill in the Blank30:50 - Stars vs Avalanche preview39:05 - Oilers vs Canucks46:00 - Changes in Toronto?50:05 - What’s next in Vegas?Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team?
