  • 1. Mini Was A Preteen Arsonist - Martha

    20:07
I sat down to pick Nathan Stephens-Griffin brain about the Martha song Mini Was A Preteen Arsonist. Nathan's band Martha released this song on their record Love Keeps Kicking in 2019. One of my favourite songs from the record, I was further intrigued by the song when a friend text me one day to see if I'd watched the documentary on Mini. Upon watching the documentary I thought it was time to speak to Nathan about the song. For me the song, Mini and Nathan all have the perfect combination of beauty, vulnerability and defiance. After the loss of a good friend, The story behind the song has evolved in to something of a love story of friendship, rebelliousness, the north east.Artwork by Suzi Kemp --- https://suzikemp.com/ This podcast was made for a university project.
  • Ep. 34 Ellie & Louise Macnamara (Heathers)

    01:21:30
Finally I built up the courage to ask Ellie and Louise Macnamara to be guests on Culture Fear.I got to ask about the evolution of Heathers as a band, which I'm sure if you're a fan of any of their releases you'll understand both in terms of the music they were putting out as well as the way they functioned as a 'band'. I asked about their relationship with music growing up and whether their family holidays really included stop offs at DIY punk festivals and Heathers first shows and Dublin mixed bill punk shows. We went on to talk about how things have looked since Heathers have wound down a bit, and why that was too. And of course loads more too. This was a great time, so I hope you enjoy listening to. Tell ya friends, or even reach out to me, if you did enjoy it @culturefearxoxox
  • EP.33 Ellis Jones (Trust Fund, Podcasts)

    01:16:26
'DIY Music and the Politics of Social Media'. That is the name of Ellis Jones' first book. It's a great read on... well the clue is in the title of the book.Ellis plays music in Podcasts and was most prolific under the name Trust Fund, where he released a few albums, a split or two and a bunch of ep's. We talk about Ellis' time playing music as well as being part of DIY and music communities as well as going in deep about ideas of what DIY is to him, and us, and others? I ask why there has been less music over the last few years, what it means to write academically and loads more.I loved this chat. I hope you do too!Enjoy xo
  • EP.32 Mary Brulatour (Champion Muay Thai fighter, Self Defense Family, Mary and the Small Omission)

    01:14:34
OK this was absolutely brilliant! I love all these podcasts, but this one.. wow! So Mary is a champion Muay Thai fighter. Late last year she won the title fight.. the champion of the America's in her weight. I am so overawed and interested in that. We talk about what it means to fight and dedicate your life to fighting. We also talk about the importance of the team around you, as well as the culture around fighting. It was super interesting and eye opening for me.We also talk about Mary's love for Self Defense Family, the band she has played in for a long while and her dreams of the future making music with them. Her solo-ish project Mary and the Small Omission, as well as old bands like Troubled Sleep. We also talk about the podcast Worth It that she edit's. Check out that podcast if you enjoyed this conversation in any way. It's a brilliant podcast. Search it in your podcast app or find all the info on instagram @worth_it_podcastThanks for stopping by. Steven Hill started Struggletown Records in 2011 and has released records for a number of bands from his city of Glasgow as well as for bands from around the world such as Shook Ones, Into It. Over It and Death Is Not Glamourous. He'd stopped the label for a few years, but as soon as I saw he was starting it back up I knew I wanted to get him on the podcast to hear about it. The label has changed, and we talk about that. We talk about the record by Flinch. that compelled him to start the label back up. We talk about his thoughts on DIY, how thats reflected throughout live music in Glasgow and how it might look post-pandemic.We talk about the new podcast he has started, Struggletown Community Council. This year has been brilliant for music. There is also a plethora of other bands that they played in separately, like The Querelles & Turn Cold. It was really interesting talking through so many of the experiences they shared together, and how their perspectives may have varied. we talk about how they grew up playing and learning their instruments together, playing in bands and navigating different punk scenes and so so much more too of course.I hope you all enjoy this.
