Violence Against Asian Americans (One Year Later)

One year ago as the frenzy of the Pandemic was rising to an all-time high, the U.S. saw a spike in violence against Asian Americans.  We were scared for what the future held, and how bad the problem could get.  One year later a horrible tragedy occurred in Atlanta killing 8 people, 7 we of Asian descent (and 6 of the victims were women) In this episode, we take a look at what led to the violent events in Atlanta, the history of violence against AAPI in this country, and how we can keep our AAPI loved ones safe.

Mirrors and Windows

Our monthlong deep dive into Education is coming to a close, but not without one last inspiring conversation.Teachers.We’ve all had them, but how many Teachers or Professors of Color did you have when you were a student? After a long pause and some mental time travel, “a few” was the answer Kaytie and I managed to muster. We want to help change that by having a conversation about the importance of having Teachers and Professors of Color in the classroom. We have a great guest on today who will be breaking down the concept of Mirrors and Windows, telling us what Justice in Education looks like, and how communities can help diversify the teachers who teach our children.Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is:Alana- Brown Girls Stationary (@browngirlsstationery)- Stationery & School Supplies for Brown Girls https://brown-girls-stationery.myshopify.com/Kaytie- The Flour Box (@theflourboxseattle) Thoughtfully handmade donuts + baked goods. Women Stemmin’

S.T.E.M (aka Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) is a simple acronym that is loaded with stereotypes mainly having to do with women, and their perceived lack of abilities to excel at these subjects.Since negative stereotyping exists about women in STEM, this has a direct impact on who chooses to pursue a career in a STEM field. On this episode, we talk to our favorite STEMinist (and fellow podcaster) about how to slay the Patriarchy in STEM, how to make STEM careers more welcoming and inclusive for women and people of Color, and talk about how confidence is a crucial ingredient for career success.Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is:Alana- The Black Toy Store (@theblacktoystore) Online destination for hand- picked, curated children;’s toys, games, books, and gifts that reflect the beauty and diversity of the African diaspora https://blacktoystore.com/Kaytie- Wonton in a Million (@wontoninamillion) Home of the DimSum Steam Team, an adorable group of characters inspired by dimsum.Show stationery, planner goodies, perch, and more. https://wontoninamillion.com/Keep Up With Tiffany DawsonE: tiffany@tiffanydawson.coW: www.tiffanydawson.coIG: @tiffanydawson_Links: http://www.tiffanydawson.co/linksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/wonderwomeninstem/Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffany-w-dawson/Find us on Social Media:@blackandyellowpodcastAlana J.
