“It’s bigger than hip hop” said Dead Prez on their chart-topping song “Hip Hop” off their debut album Let’s Get Free. Today that most certainly rings true. What the forefathers of hip hop envisioned what would become of this new emerging style in the late 70s in the Bronx, NY is a far cry of where hip hop lives and operates in today.
Today hip hop has a heavy influence on mainstream pop culture and is heard all over the world on all platforms. MCs are no longer just in their respective neighborhoods, but are bi-coastal and influencing everything from clothing to movies and establishing their own brands.
