Alvina August, Your Gift Will Make Room For You

Actor Alvina August was born and raised in Zimbabwe. A strained relationship with her father led her and her mother to Canada prior to her attending University, on a path to being a doctor. But as life as a doctor came closer to being a reality, something within her balked. A powerful singer, her friend submitted a tape to Canadian Idol and she was one of five Canadians selected to audition. That went no further, but the realization that a life in the Arts was a possibility planted the seeds for what has eventually followed: she is a regular fixture on television who can currently be seen on NBC's Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, exhibiting the pipes that got her there. Being mixed race, she weighs in on the challenges of differing skin color and moving halfway across the world only to realize that her biggest journey is the one to discover herself. It is not the critic who counts. Art Williams, Influencing with Dopeness in the Black Community

When you're as stylish and classy as Art Williams, you can get away with an Instagram handle like @thedopeinfluencer. But survival was the only thing on Art's mind in the first twelve years of his life. Well, survival, football and, eventually barbershops. Now a staple in Portland's black community, Art is not only the owner of a successful barbershop that is extensively involved in charities and programs that help minorities level up, he does double duty as the personal barber to former 10,000 NOs podcast guest, Actor Aldis Hodge. A former professional football player, Art travels back and forth from far-off sets not allowing them to prevent him from being a major influence of stability in a formerly challenged community. When he's not busy cutting hair, he is constantly inspiring others to exceed the expectations of their given circumstances the way he did.It is not the critic who counts. Love Requires Vulnerability But So Does Toughness

When my friend and past guest Matt Long, one of the toughest guys I know who has been through more than most humans should go through, dropped by to speak to the 10,000 NOs Insiders Community at the end of January, he shocked the group. Expecting this former New York City firefighter turned Ironman turned Near-Death Crash Victim turned Speaker/Author to come in beating his chest, all the members were shocked by his central topic: Vulnerability. Despite popular opinion, being vulnerable doesn't make you "soft". The ability to show vulnerability is a sign of strength and the key to everything from relationships to parenting to career success.Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 "No"s... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week.It is not the critic who counts. Santiago Arana: The American Dream, Fueled by Love

To look at Santiago Arana now, one would think he was the luckiest guy in the world: great career, beautiful family and all the trappings of the good life. But looks can be deceiving. Coming to America from Bolivia with only $220 in his pocket, the clothes on his back, and a few other minor possessions, the only promise Santiago had was to stay on his aunt's couch for 8 months. A lot of hard work, plenty of risk and the love of an American woman proved to be the winning formula that brought him from washing dishes in a Santa Barbara restaurant without understanding a word of English to being ranked #1 in Los Angeles's most valuable real estate neighborhoods, west of the 405 freeway. A Principal and Partner of The Agency, he is ranked #8 among realtors nationwide, #3 in California and, for the second year in a row, #1 Latino Agent in the country for sales volume by the National Association for Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. It is not the critic who counts. D.C. Crenshaw, Expand Your Lane

After playing football at Bowling Green State University, D.C. Crenshaw was working in pharmaceuticals until he lost his job in the financial crisis of 2008. Forced to pivot, he has since made a name for himself as a food and lifestyle entrepreneur and personality, publishes Fete Lifestyle Magazine and co-founded Little Diner’s Crew, a dining club for kids that expands kids’ palates beyond mac-n-cheese and chicken fingers. The Executive Producer and host of the two-time Emmy nominated docu-series Game Time Dine, DC combined his passions by showcasing professional athletes’ passions away from the game via dining. We talk about changing courses when needed and opening yourself to new possibilities. It is not the critic who counts.
