10/10 You're Great

Thunder, Lightning, Strike

Season 1, Ep. 12

This week we celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Go! Team's criminally underrated (and criminally produced) debut album Thunder, Lightning, Strike. For like five years I could have sworn it was called Tiger, Lightning, Strike because of the Tiger on the cover. To never make that error again I've replaced the tiger with our horrible baby, Violet.

Also found in this episode: Music is ranked by someone who is not us and therefore they mess it all up, we receive a crucial bit of nipple news, and stick around for an incomprehensible game-slash-prophetic-vision.

Chris is getting frustrated that we are not superfamous yet so he insisted we do the obvious thing and cover an album that no one has ever heard of. Good thing the album he chose is saucy and bossy and sounds 100% exactly like Bee Thousand by Guided by Voices and also exactly like Who Could It Be Now if that was written by Sting or some other non Australian. Note to self: google if Sting from Australia. Also up for discussion: One of us admits to things that would never hold up in a court of law so don't even try it, Drake buys a velveteen car, and a double BevCheck to whet yr whistle.
  • 15. Graduation

    01:28:22
In this episode we do not talk about what Kanye has been up to lately. I know that's morally irresponsible because inaction in the face of hatred is complicity but also: we didn't want to do it! It's bad to do Nazi stuff, sorry but you already knew that. That damning preamble aside, this is a good album so we enjoyed talking about it. The episode is kind of a grower because Chris woke us up from crucial naptime to record so we're a little sleepy off the top, but it does get there! Also up for discussion: Hunter Biden gets the aux cable during a lapdance, the bong ripped 'round the world, and a truly terrible BevCheck
  • 14. It's Lisztblitzomania 1

    02:06:05
The future of content is reacting to content and boy are we content to do that! Some magazine released a list of the 300 greatest albums and its wrong by virtue of not being written by us, three guys who combined recognize upwards of 10 albums. Spoiler alert: Astrolounge is NOT represented. Also in this episode: we get a new BevCheck and BevCheck theme (!), and Drake dives into an embarrassing situation the way the Assassin's Creed guys dive into hay bales (eagerly and with an eagle noise).
  • 13. LCD Soundsystem

    02:04:22
We didn't stop posting, to everyone's regret. Yes, for this very special episode we posted on a Friday, which we will also be doing perfectly forever from now on. Also hey, we talk about LCD Soundsystem's self-titled debut LCD Soundsystem. That's the name of the band! Also also we saw them live and enjoyed it! Wow!Also up for discussion: We make expensive real estate moves, and an exceedingly thorough review of the Apple Top 100. Sorry!
  • 11. Here And Nowhere Else

    01:47:33
CURSED BY GOD: This episode is FULL of flubs and was our SECOND TRY doing this album so we had to PUT IT OUT. Please ignore EVERY SIN WE COMMIT (including perjury, not knowing how to sync Bluetooth, and lots of hemming and hawing) as we three hims try to discuss Cloud Nothing's 20XX album, Here And Nowhere Else. Unlike this podcast, it is a talented expression of ideas! Also an actual trigger warning: there are mentions of self harm and suicidal ideation in this episode.VINDICATED BY HISTORY: We put a pin in the Kendrick/Drake beef, BevCheck returns with a vengeance, and we try and fail to share new music we liked.
  • 10. Treats

    01:16:55
FROM THE VAULT: This week, one of the hosts is learning to deal with his adult onset hypochondria (turns out its not a form of OCD, which is wild because it sure feels obsessive and compulsive!) so we are digging into the vault! We fished this episode from the dumpster out back, a test pilot that was NOT FIT TO AIR until we RAN OUT OF OPTIONS IMMEDIATELY. In it, we're a little fun and flirty and discuss Sleigh Bell's 2010 sensation Treats. And what a treat it is! I was legally obligated to type that and my delete key is broken, sorry. Also up for discussion: Valentine's Day, because we recorded this earlier and didn't think about how dated it would immediately become, the "new" vampire weekend tracks that are so old the album has come and gone, and Chris' wife is a superstar at flipping around.
  • 9. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino

    01:28:17
In this week's episode we follow up on last week's episode by having the same show name, hosts and general format in what critics are calling "yet another episode." Sorry that description was boring because this album absolutely is not: the stellar (lunar?) album that 100% of the critics got totally wrong half of the time, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. Also in this episode: Drake does what very well be the worst AI thing yet, Billie Eilish hates certain large mammals, and Charlie cements his legacy as Villain of the Pod in a contentious showtime.
  • 8. Sam's Town

    01:50:23
On a very specialsode, your hosts discuss the Killer's audience-alienating (and therefore intrinsically interesting) sophomore debut, Sam's Town. Join them as they explore if Uncle Johnny is actually a "cool uncle", morosely remember When You/They Were Young, and debate whether or not they should've just done Hot Fuss instead. Also up for discussion: A conspiracy-riddled web of lies is unraveled as we chart Drake's current beefs, a new flavor is tasted "live and on air", and far too many shows are attended (but at least they all are good).
